There is a lot of conversation and controversy in the technology world about “the Cloud.” While some praise it as a great resource for companies, others are fearful that it takes away the safety of information stored digitally. After all, if the information is stored on the Internet, what keeps someone else from getting to it?
WHAT IS THE “CLOUD” AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
The Cloud, which is also called “cloud computing,” uses shared resources sent as a service over a network. Usually the network used is the Internet. This does not mean that information is on the Internet. It is simply accessed through the Internet. The information is only available to approved users.
WHY IS THE CLOUD SAFE?
Since critical data is stored remotely instead of on computer hard drives, protecting information is as simple as deactivating a user account. Since the data is not tied to specific physical hardware, it is easier and safer to control who has access to it, as well as updating access as business needs change.
Using the Cloud is not the same as using the Internet. Most information online is designed to be shared, but data in the Cloud is designed to be separate and safe from anyone except authorized users.
KARMAK AND THE CLOUD
Currently Karmak uses an internal private cloud for our Hosted Solution customers that is secure from the outside world. Just as with normal Cloud usage, the data stored by Karmak is accessed by approved users and safe from outside sources. This allows for digital storage with easy access, while maintaining the strict safety and privacy policies needed to protect customers. Anyone who needs access to the data can get it quickly and easily, and others can be kept away from sensitive information as easily as disabling a username and password.
